Don’t have the yard space for a garden? You can reuse rain gutters to create a lovely herb and salad garden right on the side of your house or garage. Simply attach gutters to a wall, fill with topsoil, and get planting. These gutter planters are perfect for herbs as well as lettuce, and any other vegetables that have shallow roots and don’t spread out too much.

Urban Farmer uses Eco-Packets™ to package all of it’s seeds. Eco-packets are made using old magazines and catalogs that would otherwise go to a landfill. They separate the catalogs by paper strength and size and then use a “secret” process to turn each page into a new seed packet that will be filled and shipped out to their customers.
RecycleChicken thinks this is a great idea. Not only is this a great way to repurpose magazines but the graphics look so cool on seed packets.

If you’re looking for a way to reuse those great little wooden clementine crates, RecycleChicken has some suggestions. As we all have probably figured out already these crates make great storage containers. They can be used to store paperwork, craft supplies, and are great for small childrens’ toys. Along with that we have also created a list of other interesting ways to put these crates to good reuse.
- Use them as planters! Hang on to them until the spring and plant some pretty flowers in them.
- Turn them upside down and drill more holes into the bottom. It’s the perfect way to organize scissors and other craft items.
- Use them as doll beds for your kids to play with.
- Make gift baskets. This is an especially great idea over the holidays. Fill them with Christmas cookies, homemade jams, and other yummy treats.
- Organize your mail with them. We do this in our hallway. One for bills, one for coupons and menus, etc.
- Put one on the top of your toilet tank to keep extra rolls of toilet paper in.
- Store remote controls in them.
- Make your own herb garden using clementine boxes and one pint ice cream containers.
Plant Your Own Herb Garden Kit: Made With Recycled Materials

How to:
Include in the window sill garden:
- One Clementine box
- Six- 1 pint ice-cream containers with lids
- Potting soil
- Seed packets.
- Markers or Paint to decorate
Poke a drainage hole in the middle of the bottom of ice-cream containers. Fill with potting soil. Decorate the lids with pictures of herbs cut from last year’s seed catalogs or use the inside of a cereal box and write your own label. I used a circle cutter (found at craft stores) but you could cut the rim off an extra cover for a stencil that you can then trace. Line the Clementine box with plastic or reuse plastic cups from your recycle bin. Often times companies offer mixed seed packets but if making several herb gardens, you could repackage seeds: giving each kit a few of each kind of seed. A pretty ribbon adds to the presentation.
Note: You will need to put a spacer in the bottom of your Clementine box. Use whatever you can find to raise up the bottom of the box about an inch. Salvaged peanuts and a piece of scrap cardboard will do the trick. The spacer is needed to lift the containers because the covers are on. Once the lids are removed, the spacer can also be removed; the containers will now fit.
A Gift Tray of Seedlings:
Alternatively you can pot some small herbs either store bought or share from your garden; just skip the lids.

Clean the World Foundation Inc. is saving lives one bar of soap at a time. All of the unused soap left in hotel rooms has potential to save lives in third world countries. These countries do not have soap readily available to them and because of this many diseases that could have been prevented with simple hand washing are killing people. Clean the World Foundation Inc. is collecting soap from hotel rooms all over Florida as well as several other states, and recycling it for distribution in countries such as Haiti. The full story is available at My Fox New York. Hotels, Motels, and Bed & Breakfast owners wishing to donate soap and shampoo to Clean the World Foundation Inc. can do so by contacting Paul Till at ptill@cleantheworld.org.
